When Should I Begin My LAPD Renewal?
LAPD permit holders may begin the renewal application 90 days before the expiration date printed on their current license.
Training must be completed before the current license expires. LAPD states that renewal training should not be dated more than six months before the expiration date.
Beginning September 1, 2026, California law requires new fingerprints for CCW renewals submitted to the California Department of Justice. Applicants whose permits expire after September 1, 2026 should follow LAPD’s current Live Scan instructions.
An expired license does not authorize concealed carry while the renewal is being processed.

What Makes Medic Up Different?
Experienced Law-Enforcement Instructors
Medic Up’s training team includes active and retired law-enforcement personnel, firearms instructors, military veterans and first responders.
Students receive practical instruction based on real-world experience—not simply videos, lectures or the minimum number of rounds required to complete a qualification.
Firearms and Medical Training Together
Responsible concealed carry involves more than knowing how to use a firearm. It also means being prepared to help yourself, your family or another person following a serious injury.
Hands-on bleeding-control instruction is incorporated into our CCW training. Students learn how to:
- Recognize life-threatening bleeding
- Apply direct pressure
- Pack a wound
- Properly apply a tourniquet
- Respond until professional medical assistance arrives
This medical component is one of the most frequently mentioned reasons students recommend Medic Up.
Practical Law-Enforcement Contact Training
LAPD CCW students receive practical instruction on interacting with law-enforcement officers while legally carrying a firearm.
Training includes traffic-stop considerations, communication, responsible decision-making and what to expect from responding officers following a defensive incident.
Training for New and Experienced Shooters
Our instructors work with students at different experience levels. Newer shooters receive patient coaching on safety and fundamentals, while experienced shooters participate in practical drills that go beyond the required qualification.
If you have never fired your handgun or cannot safely operate it, contact us before class. Private instruction may be recommended before attending the CCW course.
What to Bring to LAPD CCW Training
Students should bring:
- Government-issued photo identification
- Each firearm being listed on the permit
- A quality IWB or OWB holster for each firearm
- A sturdy belt
- Three magazines for the primary firearm when possible
- Magazine pouch
- Approximately 200 rounds for the primary firearm
- Approximately 50 rounds for each additional firearm
- Eye and ear protection
- Baseball-style hat
- Closed-toe shoes
- Water, food and sunscreen
- Weather-appropriate clothing
- Any current CCW paperwork identified in the class instructions
SERPA-style holsters are not permitted.
All firearms should arrive unloaded and properly secured. Do not handle firearms or ammunition until directed by an instructor.
LAPD Firearm Requirements
LAPD currently allows up to three firearms on a CCW license.
Each firearm must:
- Be registered to the applicant or permit holder in California
- Have accurate make, model, caliber and serial-number information
- Match the information contained in the state’s firearm records
- Be safe, operable and compliant with state and federal law
- Be capable of being reasonably concealed
Red-dot optics and weapon-mounted lights are permitted when properly installed. A weapon-mounted light does not require a separate qualification, but students must bring a compatible holster. Any optic should be properly zeroed before class.
LAPD does not accept chest bags, 5.11-style carry bags or similar off-body carry systems as a substitute for an approved concealed-carry holster during qualification.
LAPD Live-Fire Qualification
Students must demonstrate safe firearm handling and pass the required live-fire qualification with each firearm being listed on the permit.
The LAPD course of fire includes shooting from the required distances under the supervision of an approved instructor.
The primary firearm qualification is conducted at 3, 5 and 7 yards. Additional firearm qualifications follow LAPD’s required course of fire.
Students are coached on safe presentation from the holster, grip, stance, sight alignment, trigger control and accuracy before qualification.
Passing the qualification does not replace the need for continued practice. Medic Up offers additional practical pistol, low-light and private firearms training for students who want to continue building their skills.
Optional Arizona Nonresident CCW Endorsement
Eligible students may add an Arizona nonresident CCW endorsement to their California training.
An Arizona permit can provide lawful concealed-carry privileges in additional states that recognize Arizona permits. It does not authorize concealed carry in California by itself.
The Medic Up Arizona endorsement is available for $95 and includes the required supporting training documentation. Fingerprinting and application assistance are available as described during registration.
